In 2005, it was estimated that the surf industry worldwide was worth 10 billion dollars. Back then, there was a time when girls' favorite color were
fuchsia or turquoise, worn on a pair of Roxy shorts ordered from a catalogue. […] On television, Mischa Barton got cozy with the surfers in the third season
of Newport Beach. It was the golden age of surf culture tie-in products. And in French schools, there was a new craze as we started choosing our school diaries with the colors of Quiksilver or Billabong.

Despite the hopes for openness sparked by the election of Pope Francis nearly ten years ago, the Catholic Church still forbids same-sex religious marriage. In France, some priests and deacons have chosen to defy this ban by offering not marriages, but 'prayer services' or blessings for gay couples —almost in secret.

When I arrive for my meeting with Sara Whitestone, a 28-year-old neuroscientist based in Bordeaux, I’m sweaty and five minutes late.Whitestone is already putting my delay to good use by calling her mother in the U.S. Immediately, I realise that she and I aren’t cut from the same cloth. In life, you have two types of people: Those who organise their time, and those who run around chasing it like headless chickens
